The American originally announced in January that she planned to retire at the end of the 2024 season, citing health issues, including rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis, and her wish to start a family. However, on Thursday, Collins shared that her plans had changed.
“I was very excited to end my tennis career and start a new chapter, but things haven’t gone as expected,” she wrote on Instagram. She explained that she has been consulting specialists to explore the best approach to achieving her goal of starting a family. “Dealing with endometriosis and fertility is a massive challenge for many women, and I’m actively navigating it with full confidence in my team. It’s just taking longer than I anticipated.”
She continued, “The ‘DANIMAL’ story isn’t over. I’ll be back on tour in 2025. While nothing in life is guaranteed, I’m hoping to build on my 2024 progress and keep playing until I have more clarity around my personal journey. For now, expect some more epic matches.”
Since her announcement, the 30-year-old has been in peak form. Following her second-round loss to Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open, Collins clinched her first WTA 1000 title at the Miami Open in March and followed it up with a win at the Charleston Open, re-entering the world’s top 10 after dropping to No. 71 in February.
After reaching the Paris Olympics quarterfinals, Collins suffered first-round losses at her next three tournaments, including a memorable early exit at the US Open, where she declined a farewell ceremony, later jokingly comparing herself to Ben Stiller’s character, Gaylord ‘Greg’ Focker, from *Meet the Parents.*
Collins last competed at the Guadalajara Open in September but is set to represent the USA in the United Cup starting on December 27.
