Nick Kyrgios is poised to make his long-awaited return to tennis, having played just a single match in the last two years. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist expressed optimism, stating, “This is probably the best I’ve felt in two years,” as he prepares for a potential comeback at the 2025 Australian Open. Kyrgios, who last competed in June 2023, acknowledged that after such an extended break, any achievements moving forward would be a “bonus.”
Nick Kyrgios is gearing up for his much-anticipated return to the tennis court at the 2025 Australian Open. The 29-year-old has been sidelined since the start of 2023, having undergone three surgeries due to knee and wrist injuries. At times, his return seemed uncertain. However, Kyrgios now appears on track for a January comeback in front of his home crowd in Australia, telling 9News Melbourne, “Honestly, this is probably the best I’ve felt in two years.” He recalled his stellar 2022 season, which ended with injuries during the Wimbledon and US Open finals, followed by wrist reconstruction surgery. “It was a 15% miracle chance that I’d get back to this level, and here we are,” he added. “Playing in front of the home fans is going to be awesome.”
Reflecting on his 2022 season, which saw him reach his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, Kyrgios has reiterated his goal of winning a major title to “silence the critics.” He spoke candidly about the difficulties of rehabilitation, admitting, “Physically, it was brutal. Mentally, I refused to let the injury dictate the end of my career. I wanted to leave the game on my own terms.”
Kyrgios last played competitively at the Stuttgart Open in June 2023 but is expected to make a brief appearance at the World Tennis League in December. He shared how he had to retrain his wrist, starting with practice using “Under-10s training balls,” as he gradually regained strength and confidence. Despite the long layoff, Kyrgios remains optimistic, saying, “I’ve already won in my eyes. Now, everything I achieve on the tennis court is a bonus.” The 2025 Australian Open kicks off on January 12, and while Kyrgios may not be seen as a title contender, his return alone is a victory after such a challenging period.
